The State Museum of History of Uzbekistan has reopened after a two-year renovation — and is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the sites of “Tashkent Modernism.”
The number of exhibition halls has grown from 9 to 20, and the museum’s collection of 350,000 artifacts has been fully reimagined and presented in new displays. The chronology spans the path from the earliest inhabitants of Central Asia — artifacts from the Selungur Cave and the Neanderthal remains from Teshik-Tash — to the era of the New Uzbekistan.
Among the highlights of the collection are artifacts of the Kushan Empire from Fayaz-Tepe and Kara-Tepe, fragments of the Afrasiyab murals, coin collections of the Samanids and the Timurids, and artifacts from the Second World War and the Soviet period, presented for the first time as dedicated thematic sections.
