Javlon Vakhabov Meets with Representative Trent Kelly on Capitol Hill
During his working visit to Washington, D.C., Javlon Vakhabov, Director of the International Institute for Central Asia, met with U.S. Representative Trent Kelly of Mississippi, Co-Chair of the Congressional Uzbekistan Caucus.

The meeting focused on further strengthening the strategic partnership between Uzbekistan and the United States, expanding interparliamentary dialogue, and developing practical cooperation between Uzbekistan and the State of Mississippi.

Javlon Vakhabov noted that political dialogue between Uzbekistan and the United States has gained unprecedented momentum in recent months. He emphasized that four high-level contacts between the leaders of the two countries over the past six months reflect a strong degree of mutual trust and provide a solid political foundation for expanding practical cooperation.

Particular attention was given to trade and economic cooperation, support for Uzbekistan’s accession to the World Trade Organization, and legislative efforts aimed at repealing the Jackson–Vanik Amendment as it applies to Uzbekistan.

The sides also discussed opportunities for developing cooperation with Mississippi, including in agriculture, educational exchanges, business-to-business engagement, and stronger ties between the regions of the two countries.

For his part, Representative Kelly noted that the Congressional Uzbekistan Caucus continues to expand and now brings together about 30 members of Congress, reflecting growing interest among U.S. lawmakers in strengthening cooperation with Uzbekistan.

It was noted that Uzbekistan is gaining an increasingly important place on the U.S. congressional agenda as a reliable partner for Washington in Central Asia. Congressman Kelly underscored that there remains strong bipartisan interest in Congress in further deepening relations with Uzbekistan, including through expanded trade, investment, interregional cooperation, and parliamentary dialogue.
