The agreement was reached following talks held on July 14–15 in Mashhad, Iran, where representatives of the three countries signed a protocol on establishing the new transport route.

During the trial shipment, the parties will assess how transport, customs, and border procedures work in practice, and how effectively the relevant agencies of Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Iran coordinate with one another.

A standing trilateral working group has already been set up to implement the project. It will monitor the fulfillment of the agreements, address emerging issues, and oversee the further development of the route.

The three countries also agreed to improve border infrastructure, reduce truck waiting times at crossings, streamline documentation for drivers, and develop cargo insurance mechanisms. Also under discussion are the modernization of the freight vehicle fleet, the construction of roadside infrastructure, and tapping into the capabilities of the Economic Cooperation Organization.

Looking ahead, the new transport corridor is expected to be extended to other Central Asian countries and ???????? China.

The next meeting of representatives from Tajikistan, Iran, and Afghanistan is scheduled for late October–early November 2026 in Kabul, where the parties will review the outcomes of the test run and discuss next steps.
