IICA Enhances Expert Cooperation with the Finnish Institute of International Affairs
The International Institute for Central Asia (IICA) hosted a meeting between its Director, Javlon Vakhabov, and Kristiina Silvan, Research Fellow at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FII).

The discussion focused on current regional dynamics in Central Asia, specific aspects of regional integration, and prospects for strengthening partnerships between research institutions across Central Asia and Northern Europe.

Director Vakhabov outlined key regional trends observed in recent years, including the evolution of regional cooperation, institutionalized dialogue mechanisms, and the growing “Central Asia+” formats of engagement. It was noted that, against the backdrop of Europe’s rising interest in Central Asia, advancing expert-level cooperation between the regions has become increasingly relevant.

Kristiina Silvan highlighted the role of the European Society for Central Asian Studies (ESCAS) as an academic platform that brings together scholars specializing in the history, politics, economy, and culture of Central Asian countries. ESCAS fosters international scholarly dialogue, organizes regular conferences, supports research initiatives, and facilitates connections among experts from Europe, the United States, Central Asia, and other regions.

The meeting explored ways to develop structured cooperation between IICA and FII, emphasizing prospects for joint events and establishing a sustainable mechanism to support academic dialogue between the two regions.

The Finnish institute expressed its willingness to facilitate these initiatives and assist in building connections with Finnish experts and research centers to expand the partnership network and promote joint projects.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to continue discussions on expanding academic exchanges and implementing internship programs between IICA and the Finnish Institute of International Affairs.
