IICA and the University of Tokyo Strengthen Expert Dialogue
Javlon Vakhabov, Director of the International Institute for Central Asia, met with Professor Jin Sato, Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia at the University of Tokyo.

The meeting focused on opportunities to expand academic and educational ties between Uzbekistan and Japan and strengthen cooperation between the two countries’ research institutions.

At the outset, Javlon Vakhabov noted the steady development of Uzbekistan–Japan relations and the growing contribution of academic and educational exchanges to the bilateral partnership.

It was noted that the inaugural Central Asia–Japan Summit, held in December 2025, had opened new avenues for cooperation. Particular attention was given to the initiative put forward by President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to establish a permanent expert platform bringing together leading think tanks from Central Asia and Japan.

According to the Director, direct and regular engagement between research institutions will help translate this initiative into practical cooperation by facilitating exchanges of assessments and the development of joint recommendations on sustainable development, transport connectivity and human capital.

Professor Jin Sato supported the development of regular dialogue between research institutions, noting that the exchange of knowledge and academic expertise contributes to a deeper understanding of regional processes and the development of common approaches to current development challenges.

He placed particular emphasis on supporting young researchers. Their participation in joint seminars, research projects and analytical publications, he noted, would help strengthen professional skills and forge lasting links between the two countries’ expert communities.

The parties agreed to continue their expert engagement and maintain regular contact to identify practical areas of cooperation.

Founded in 1941, the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia at the University of Tokyo is one of Japan’s leading centres for Asian studies. It conducts interdisciplinary research into the history, culture, politics and economies of Asian countries, including those of Central Asia. The Institute also promotes international academic exchanges and carries out joint research projects with partners abroad.
