The International Institute for Central Asia (IICA) is hosting the inaugural EU-Central Asia Think Tank Forum
The International Institute for Central Asia (IICA) is currently hosting the inaugural EU-Central Asia Think Tank Forum, bringing together leading experts, policymakers, business representatives, and academics from Europe and Central Asia. This landmark event takes place on the eve of the historic first EU-Central Asia Summit, set to be held in Samarkand in just two weeks.

The opening session featured a keynote address by Abdulaziz Kamilov, Special Representative of the President of Uzbekistan for Foreign Policy. In his remarks, Mr. Kamilov underscored that Central Asia is undergoing a period of profound transformation, emerging as an active player in global processes. Against this backdrop, the significance of strategic partnership with the EU has grown, as it is built upon shared values, mutual interests in stability, and sustainable development.

According to Mr. Kamilov, this forum provides a unique platform for exchanging perspectives and formulating joint development strategies. Moreover, it lays the groundwork for a continuous expert dialogue, enabling the formulation of concrete policy recommendations to further deepen cooperation between Europe and Central Asia.

In turn, IICA Director Javlon Vakhabov emphasized that this forum is taking place at a pivotal moment in the evolution of EU-Central Asia relations, establishing a foundation for a more profound strategic dialogue.

Mr. Vakhabov noted that in recent years, engagement between the two regions has gained new momentum, facilitated by expert meetings, international conferences, and an expanding network of collaborations with leading European research institutions. Concluding his address, the IICA Director encouraged participants to engage in open and productive discussions aimed at developing actionable recommendations for the upcoming summit.

In his remarks, EU Special Representative for Central Asia Eduards Stiprais highlighted the dynamic expansion of EU-Central Asia cooperation, particularly in areas such as water resources, security, and strategically important raw materials. He stressed that the growing number of high-level meetings reflects the strategic significance of bilateral relations and the increasing importance of interregional dialogue.

Mr. Stiprais further emphasized that the forum is being held in the lead-up to key milestones, expressing confidence that these discussions will serve as a catalyst for deeper cooperation.

Concluding his speech, he underscored the importance of addressing critical areas of collaboration based on the EU Strategy for Central Asia (2019) and the Joint Roadmap (2023), expressing hope for future meetings with forum participants in a face-to-face format.

The forum continues its work, providing participants with a unique platform for exchanging views, developing joint solutions, and strengthening the dialogue between the European Union and Central Asia.
