IICA Establishes First-Ever Partnership with a Swedish Research Institute
As part of a working visit to Sweden, Director of the International Institute for Central Asia (IICA) Javlon Vakhabov signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Dr. Svante E. Cornell, Director of the Institute for Security and Development Policy (ISDP).

This newly established agreement lays the groundwork for structured cooperation between the two think tanks, encompassing joint research projects, expert consultations and forums, the publication of analytical reports, as well as academic exchanges and educational programs.

The discussions placed special emphasis on regional security, strategic resilience, EU–Central Asia cooperation, critical resources, the energy transition, the development of transport corridors, and institutional dialogue across the Eurasian space. Particular attention was given to the need for robust platforms for expert dialogue and the promotion of balanced, evidence-based approaches to addressing global and regional challenges.

The signing of the MoU marks a natural progression in both sides’ commitment to fostering dialogue between the expert communities of Central Asia and Northern Europe, and to expanding multilateral cooperation within the “Central Asia Plus” formats.

The Institute for Security and Development Policy (ISDP) thus becomes the first Swedish research institution to formalize a partnership with IICA.

The Institute for Security and Development Policy is a leading independent think tank, founded in 2007 and headquartered in Stockholm, with an office in Washington, D.C. ISDP specializes in issues of security, conflict, and strategic development across Eurasia and East Asia. It works closely with the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute and the Silk Road Studies Program, a joint initiative with the American Foreign Policy Council (AFPC).
