IICA researchers visit the Center of Islamic Civilization
Researchers of the International Institute for Central Asia visited the Center of Islamic Civilization in Tashkent.

The purpose of the visit was to explore the Center’s potential as a scientific and educational platform capable of complementing IICA’s key research areas. The Institute, which specializes in regional cooperation, inter-civilizational dialogue, and contemporary developments in Central Asia, views such projects as an important resource for future research.

During the visit, the Institute’s researchers familiarized themselves with the exhibitions featuring rare manuscripts, coins, historical documents, and artifacts reflecting the intellectual legacy of prominent scholars of the region, including Imam Al-Bukhari, Abu Rayhan Biruni, Muhammad Al-Khwarizmi, and others. Particular attention was drawn to the modern reinterpretation of their scholarly heritage: the exhibits demonstrate the impact of their works on contemporary disciplines, from mathematics and astronomy to the humanities and digital technologies.

The Center offers a new format for engaging with historical material. By integrating digital technologies, interactive panels, and comparative translations, it transforms the museum space into a dynamic research environment. Working with digitized sources and comparing different interpretations of texts expands opportunities for analytical work and the preparation of expert materials.

The visit enabled a comprehensive assessment of the significance of historical and cultural heritage for IICA’s research agenda, serving as a source for expanding the research base, developing interdisciplinary approaches, and fostering regional identity.

The establishment of the Center represents a significant contribution by Uzbekistan to the preservation and promotion of the region’s shared historical heritage. The project was initiated by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and is aimed at studying and popularizing the spiritual and scientific heritage of Islamic civilization. The Center features thousands of exhibits, ranging from unique manuscripts and ancient books to archaeological finds and multimedia installations, including rare Quranic texts and works of medieval scholars. Despite its recent opening, it has already emerged as an important center of cultural and scientific life in the capital.
