IICA Explores Opportunities for Academic Cooperation with Sweden
A meeting was held at the International Institute for Central Asia (IICA) between IICA Director Javlon Vakhabov and Swedish scholars — Dr. Johan Engvall, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Security and Development Policy (Central Asia–Caucasus Institute) and the Swedish Institute of International Affairs, and Dr. Mikael Weissmann, Senior Lecturer at the Swedish Defence University.

During the discussion, the Swedish experts commended the efforts of Central Asian states in strengthening regional cooperation. In particular, they welcomed the recent border demarcation agreement between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan as a significant step toward advancing regional dialogue.

The Swedish side also gave a positive assessment of the outcomes of the recent Central Asia–European Union Summit held in Samarkand, describing it as a key indicator of the region's growing prominence in international affairs.

Director Vakhabov expressed strong interest in building academic ties with Sweden’s leading research institutions, emphasizing that developing joint initiatives would open new avenues for knowledge exchange and expert dialogue.

In this context, two sides discussed potential areas for collaboration, including joint research and educational programs in trade, investment, sustainable development, climate policy, and regional connectivity.

The experts stressed the increasing international interest in Central Asia and the need for more in-depth analysis of its regional dynamics.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed to continue exploring opportunities for joint initiatives and reaffirmed their mutual commitment to strengthening dialogue between the academic communities of the two countries.
