The Ministry of Energy plans to allocate 10-12 billion dollars for the construction of a nuclear power plant, if the initiative is supported in a referendum. This is stipulated in a consultative document to the draft Law on the Use of Alternative Energy Sources. The document also identifies problems in Kazakhstan's energy sector, including a low share of alternative and renewable energy sources, a lack of favorable conditions for their development and a lack of appropriate legislation. As part of addressing these problems, a number of measures are proposed, including incentivizing the business community to increase the share of electricity from renewable sources to 12.5% by 2029, extending preferences for all types of alternative energy sources by 2026, etc. The document will be discussed until July 27.
