Turkic States Revive Latin-Based Alphabet to Preserve Linguistic Heritage
On September 11, 2024, the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) approved a 34-letter Latin-based common alphabet to enhance linguistic unity among Turkic nations. This decision, part of a long-standing initiative, aims to simplify communication and strengthen cultural ties across member states.
The Turkic Academy coordinated this effort, publishing the Declaration on the Common Turkic Alphabet after the Turkic World Common Alphabet Commission's meeting in Baku. The finalized alphabet incorporates special characters to reflect the phonetic diversity of Turkic languages, allowing each country to adapt it to its linguistic needs.
